Modeled in 3dsmax. Rendered in LuxRender (v1.0RC4).
I stumbled upon this rather interesting shape while playing around with radial symmetry in 3dsmax. It's a mobius strip with one loop, replicated 4 times around it's X axis, then all the joining points were welded together at the seams, with a shell and lattice modifier applied after. Exporting to Luxrender was a nightmare. The resulting mesh consists of roughly 850,000 polygons, but it was getting the weld correct, so that the exported mesh didn't contain a "rat's nest" where all the axis points were welded to create a single object. The boards beneath it are all simple chamfered boxes, offset from each other slightly, with a wood texture applied.
Best viewed at full size to see the lattice work detail. More to come!
Thanks, Tony. This one beat up on my CPU, and was quite difficult to work with after welding the center axis and applying the lattice modifier. It really bogged down the viewport response, even after I collapsed the modifier stack, which is why I didn't bother getting too involved with modeling much of an environment to go along with it. Glad you like it.
